Creation of the Smerra student mutual insurance company
Like a fist raised toward the future, students have mobilized to provide access to supplemental health insurance for EVERYONE.

1985
Smerra is expanding its operations to include student services and housing
As a leader in establishing nonprofit organizations dedicated to student services and housing, Smerra has sparked an innovative movement by taking action.

Late 1980s
Publication of the first free student life guide
O.S.E. publishes its first student life guide. Forty years later, the series includes six editions, with an annual print run of over 40,000 copies.

1989
Creation of the FNIM
Smerra works with other mutual insurance companies to create the National Federation of Mutual Innovation (known at the time as the National Independent Federation of Mutuals).

Launch of Student housing insurance
Then, in 2024, a partnership with Leocare.

Smerra already manages 7,500 housing units
Under the OSE – Club Étudiant banner, Smerra manages a portfolio of 7,500 housing units in student residences throughout France and operates a private/student rental service with over 5,000 listings.

Launch of the Pack Monde Europe international insurance plan

Smerra, a pioneer in instant reimbursement
Long before third-party payment and the Viale card, Smerra reimbursed healthcare expenses immediately at its branches.

Establishment of the Smerra Corporate Foundation
Launch of the “L’Agitateur” call for proposals, a national competition that recognizes projects aimed at improving students’ living conditions, health, and academic experience.

OSE - Student Club becomes Logifac by Smerra

Launch of Student Cover France
Smerra supports international students as they arrive in France.

End of the autonomous Social Security system
Smerra is evolving while maintaining the same commitment to proximity and support.

Fac-Habitat joins Smerra and Logifac
Providing access to hundreds of residences across France. Over 18,000 students housed.

Smerra organizes its student-focused ecosystem

Our governance is mutualist and participatory: elected students sit on the board of directors. Their role is simple and concrete: to report on needs on the ground, represent students’ voices, and help transform these realities into useful decisions for health, prevention, and everyday student life.
This proximity is what allows us to move forward with a mutual insurance company that is on a human scale, fairer, and more accessible.
Daniella Zadi, our elected student president, represents the students and ensures that every decision remains aligned with our mission of student service initiative.
