OPTAM or OPTAM-ACO: Controlled Fee Schedule Option.

(1) According to the conditions defined in Articles 18 and 19 of the Smerra mutual insurance regulations.

(*) The reimbursement by the mutual insurance company of excess fees for consultations and medical procedures distinguishes between those of doctors who have signed up to controlled pricing schemes (Controlled Pricing Option, Controlled Pricing Option for Anesthesiologists, Surgeons, and obstetrician-Gynecologists) provided for in the National Agreement of August 25, 2016, applicable to private practitioners, from those of non-participating physicians.

(**) As defined by regulation (the amount of reimbursements for 100% Healthcare care and equipment applies within the limits of the maximum retail price for optical and hearing aids and within the limits of the maximum billing fees for dental care, in force on the date of care).

(***) Pursuant to Decrees 2019-21 of January 11, 2019, and 2014-1374 of November 18, 2014. For optical care, the flat rates include the frame and the co-payment. The mutual insurance company reimburses a flat rate for optical equipment every two years or every year for children under 16 or in the event of renewal justified by a change in vision, calculated from the date of purchase of the optical equipment. In all cases, the maximum reimbursement for frames is €50 for Confort coverage and €100 for Tous risques coverage. Hearing aid : limited to one hearing aid every four years for each ear. Single package regardless of the number of hearing aids.

The 100% Santé plan is available to anyone with a responsible supplemental health insurance plan.

All the answers to your questions

See all questions
  • Student health insurance is not mandatory, although it is highly recommended because reimbursements from the French national health insurance system (Assurance Maladie) are often incomplete. Having health insurance allows you to limit your healthcare expenses by receiving better reimbursement for costs related to hospitalizations, dental care, and even optical care.

  • The mutual insurance company supplements Social Security reimbursements for your medical expenses (consultations, medication, hospitalization). The difference between this and health insurance lies mainly in the status of the organization: a mutual insurance company is a non-profit organization, whereas an insurance company is a commercial enterprise.

Smerra belongs to the first category: the real decision-makers are the elected student representatives who make up the mutual insurance company’s board of directors.

  • For students, basic health insurance costs between €20 and €40 per month (depending on the level of coverage chosen). Smerra offers low-cost health insurance starting at €5/month for students.

  • Yes, it is possible to remain on your parents’ health insurance plan. But before you decide, check what is covered and up to what age you are covered. The most important thing is to have coverage that suits your student life: reimbursement for osteopathy consultations, sanitary protection or contraceptives, or even a contribution towards the purchase of fruit and vegetables.

Good news: if you want to stay on your parents’ health insurance but also want reimbursements for your student life (taxis home from parties, fruit and vegetables, etc.), check out the Tonic Études student supplementary insurance!

  • Good news: if you are experiencing financial difficulties, you may be eligible for Complémentaire santé solidaire (CSS or C2S). This is a government subsidy that covers all or part of your health insurance premiums, depending on your income. In other words, you can keep your health insurance reimbursements without breaking your student budget.

Eligibility is determined using the online simulator at ameli.fr or by calling +33 (0)800 971 391 (free service and call).

Smerra manages the Complémentaire Santé Solidaire (C2S)! You can apply on ameli.fr and select Smerra as your managing organization: it will then take care of reimbursing your healthcare costs.

  • Signing up for student health insurance is super easy: everything can be done directly on our website (you’re already in the right place). Once your registration has been confirmed, you will find your third-party payment card in your personal account, which you can present at the pharmacy, doctor’s office, or for an X-ray.
