Is health insurance mandatory when studying abroad?

Yes, depending on your country of study or university, student health insurance is mandatory when studying abroad. Even if it is not mandatory, we strongly recommend it.

Are you going to Europe? Your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) gives you access to medical care in your host country, but it does not cover everything: expensive hospitalization, repatriation, or damage to others remain your responsibility. It is therefore essential to protect yourself by taking out international insurance – Pack Europe, which will also cover you for civil and rental liability!

Are you traveling internationally (outside Europe)? Outside the European Economic Area and Switzerland, the EHIC is not valid. You will therefore need to take out private international health insurance such as the Pack Monde, which offers you comprehensive coverage: 100% reimbursement of medical expenses, repatriation assistance, civil liability, and coverage throughout your stay, whether you are on Erasmus, an internship, studying, or taking a gap year.

With Smerra’s Pack Monde Europe insurance, you can enjoy your international experience with peace of mind!

Are you going to study or do an internship in Quebec?

Are you going to study, do a university exchange (including a double degree), or do an unpaid internship between France and Quebec? In certain situations, the Franco-Quebec agreement allows you to remain affiliated with your social security system in France, while still being able to receive healthcare in your host country without having to join the local system. This arrangement applies to students in the context of studies, exchanges between higher education institutions, or unpaid internships related to your studies. To take advantage of this, you must submit the certificate corresponding to your situation to your French health insurance fund before your departure:

  • The EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) allows students from the European Economic Area and Switzerland to access medical care in their host country, but it does not cover repatriation, high hospital costs, or civil liability.

International health insurance, such as the Smerra PAck Monde Europe, provides you with comprehensive health and insurance coverage that is valid internationally. You benefit from 100% reimbursement of medical expenses, repatriation assistance, and personal and rental liability insurance throughout your stay abroad.

  • Yes, in most cases, student health insurance is mandatory to participate in an Erasmus program or any study abroad program.

Even with the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), many universities require proof of private insurance covering medical expenses, repatriation, and personal liability.

This international civil liability protects you if you cause unintentional damage to others, at your university, in your accommodation, or during your internship abroad.

By subscribing to the Smerra’s Pack Monde or Pack Europe, you benefit from comprehensive coverage and a document recognized by international higher education institutions.

  • The price depends on your destination country and the length of your stay.

At Smerra, you can take out the Pack Europe insurance from €29/month or the Pack Monde from €38/month. We also offer discounted rates for stays of 15 days. Each plan includes 100% reimbursement for medical care and hospitalization (with no deductible), as well as comprehensive assistance in case of emergency or repatriation. Personal liability and rental insurance are included.

  • Many countries outside the European Economic Area and Switzerland require proof of international health insurance when applying for a student visa. This document proves that you have private medical coverage, including hospitalization, repatriation, and civil liability, for the entire duration of your stay abroad.

  • International civil liability covers unintentional damage that you may cause to others or their property during your study abroad program: everyday accidents, damage to rental property, broken equipment, etc.

Included in the Smerra Pack Monde Europe, this coverage protects your financial security and prevents you from having to pay significant expenses.
